Avoiding town because you need to rest? Take A Seat in and around Southwell

Avoiding town because you need to rest? Take A Seat in and around Southwell

Do you avoid going into local town centres because you need to rest and are not sure if you will be able to?

In Southwell and the surrounding villages, we are extremely lucky. You are unlikely to be refused somewhere to regain your breath and recharge those batteries. However, not everyone is happy to ask especially if they have no intention of making a purchase and this is where the ‘Take A Seat’ intiative comes in. Below is some more information on how it has come to be in Southwell as well as across Nottingham-shire. On the map you will see the local businesses who have officially registered with the scheme.

The Southwell Live at Home have gotten everyone involved – they tell us more:

“Whilst chatting to members during activities we realised that one of the obstacles to visiting the local shops is needing to sit and rest regularly. Many members avoid visiting areas when they are not sure where appropriate seating will be situated. On exploring options we discovered the ‘Take A Seat’ Initiative led by the Nottinghamshire County Council group Age Friendly.

Businesses are invited to officially declare that they are ‘Age Friendly’ and will happily offer a seat to anyone in need of it. You do not need to make a purchase or be a previous customer, you simply ask and you are guaranteed a warm response.

We’ve had a fantastic response from the Southwell area businesses, so do look out for this sticker in windows across town as well as the rest of Nottinghamshire. Details of all businesses involved can be found at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/takeaseat. Southwell area businesses who have registered for the initiative will feature on this Southwell Scoop page,  in future newsletters and on the Southwell Live at Home facebook page. “

We wanted to Thank everyone involved. This not only helps older people within the community, it raises awareness of the difficulties faced by others and helps to reduce loneliness and isolation by eliminating one of the obstacles to coming out.

CLICK ONTO THE MAP AND ZOOM IN AND OUT TO FIND ALL THE REGISTERED BUSINESSES. We will also be adding outside seats available so that you can plan your walking too.

Are you a local business willing to provide a Seat for older members of the community to rest for a few minutes whilst walking into and around town? Then please join our ‘Take A Seat’ Campaign.

Here at the Southwell Live at Home Scheme we are in the fortunate position to spend time with older members of our community. The age of our members ranges from 60 through to 102 and their ability to visit Southwell town centre varies depending not on age but on a combination of environmental and physical factors.

Whether walking unaided or with assistance many of our members have told us that they avoid going into town simply because they need to stop regularly to rest and there is a lack of suitable seats on their journey. Ultimately this increases loneliness and isolation within individuals, resulting in increased health problems and depression.

We are determined at The Southwell Live at Home Scheme to tackle this growing problem and believe that the ‘Take A Seat’ Initiative is an easy first step for the community to become involved.

“I know that our local businesses would never refuse a request for a seat, but it is not something I like to do. Seeing the sticker would help me to feel more welcome and comfortable asking for help.” Local resident and lunch club member.

The Initiative overseen by The Age Friendly Nottinghamshire Team at Notts County Council is very simple. A local business registers online via Nottinghamshire.gov.uk/takeaseat or in person via ourselves.

By registering you agree to :
– Display a ‘Take a Seat’ sticker in the window;
– Provide a chair for someone who may need to sit and rest before continuing on their journey.
– Be listed on the Notts County Council Take A Seat website page.

In addition to this we will support the businesses involved and share details with our members and volunteers.

Please do get in touch with Southwell Live at Home on southwell.liveathome@mha.org.uk if you are interested in knowing more or when you register. Thank you for your support.

Plastic Free Southwell – 5 Easy Kitchen Swaps

Plastic Free Southwell – 5 Easy Kitchen Swaps

Some more quick ‘Plastic Free Southwell’ tips from a local resident, Janina,  who was appalled at the amount of waste in the world and plastic in the oceans. 5 easy Kitchen Swaps comes just in time for the Plastic Free Pantry Pop-Up shop, this weekend at The Henhouse in Southwell. Please do share your experiences and tips on becoming plastic free in the comments below or via our social media @SouthwellScoop #PlasticFreeSouthwell.

5 Easy Kitchen Swaps

1 – Cling film can go!

abeego-bees-wax-food-wrap-plastic-free-southwell-blog

Use Bees wax wraps. A bit on the costly side but works better and has a long life span.

These wraps come in various sizes and are reportedly good to reuse with washing in cool soapy water for up to a year –

2 – Plastic water bottles can be replaced

With a metal bottle that can be cleaned far easier.

Camping Shops and most supermarkets now stock both adult and children’s options.

Also available here online https://andkeep.com/collections/reusable-bottles-1

3 – No more kitchen roll.

Why create the waste ? These often come wrapped in plastic and let’s face it, when available, you will always use more than is necessary. Use a microfiber cloth and a cleaning product. You may even want to reduce plastic further by making your own cleaning products.

4 – Bulk buy and store in new ways.

Individual portions can produce a lot of waste and many plastic containers cannot be recycled through our refuse system – did you know that it is not possible to recycle black plastic at all! Tetra packaging also needs to be collected seperately to our household waste.

Bulk purchase shops, where you bring your own containers are appearing on line with the Plastic Free Pantry, based in Nottingham. Fab products all wrapped in strong paper or compostable foil. They even have pop up shops – the next one here in Southwell, Nottinghamshire on 25th and 26th August 2018. Bring your own storage containers and buy by weight. A 10% discount is offered to those who bring any litter picked from the surrounding area on the way to the store!

Suggestions for storage:

Organic net grocery bags available from The Hen House, Southwell.

Tupperware – ex chinese takeaway boxes –  you know you have some tucked away. Also available now in many shops are glass containers with press on lids – ideal as these can be put to good use throughout the kitchen.

5 – For all you coffee (or tea) drinkers – Take your own coffee cups on the go.

bamboo-reusable-cup-southwell-minster-shop-plastic-free-southwellThis has the added advantage of making sure your first cup on the go is exactly as you like it – straight from your kitchen.

When you begin, switching back to a plastic free household can seem overwhelming especially if you are working and have children to organise – Janina has approached it, literally one item at a time, do share your tips for making it easier below so that we can help spread the word to others in the area.
